History

Above ground, the Brána Matky Boží leads through the city’s history. It is the last surviving historic city gate in Jihlava and features a viewing platform and an exhibition. The original watchtower top offers a panoramic view of the centre of Jihlava.

The Muzeum Vysočiny Jihlava presents the history of the city from the Gothic period to the 20th century. Guided tours with commentary at the Stříbrný dům also explain the history of one of the oldest burgher houses in Jihlava. The tours include exhibits from the royal mint, which were found in the courtyard of the house during renovation work.

Culture

The Church of St James the Greater in Jihlava is a national cultural monument and the city’s most important parish church. Tours of the interior and the historic roof structures are available.

The Dům Gustava Mahlera presents the coexistence and interconnection of Czech, German and Jewish cultures in Jihlava. Jihlava Town Hall can also be visited as part of guided tours with commentary by Brána Jihlavy.

The natural history exhibitions at the Muzeum Vysočiny Jihlava explore the aquatic environment, meadows and forests of the Českomoravská vrchovina region.

Gustav Mahler Park combines water, undulating lawns, sharply shaped and stone elements with the historic site of the zwinger, the course of the city wall and the exposed foundations of a burned-down synagogue.

Brewing Tradition

After booking in advance, Pivovar Jihlava offers tours of the brewhouse, fermentation room and storage cellar, ending with a beer tasting. Along the Pivovarská naučná stezka, visitors can learn more about the brewing tradition in Jihlava from twelve information boards.
