Vrskmaň combines preserved evidence of the village’s history with mining and geological features, as well as present-day opportunities for sports and community life.

History and Villagescape

The first written mention of Vrskmaň dates from 1417. The more recent history of the village included a former neo-Gothic chapel dating from 1898, which had been built on the site of an older Baroque chapel from 1776 and was demolished between 1972 and 1974. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1886 has been preserved. At the southern edge of the village square there is also a Marian column with a statue of the Virgin Mary from 1887.

At the crossroads in front of House No. 4, there were three reconciliation crosses and a large Baroque cross with a statue of Christ dating from 1731. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk and this group of crosses were moved to Vrskmaň from the lost settlement of Kyjice. Another valuable historic property is the Herrova Villa; the years 1862 and 1900 are displayed on its main façade. Above the passage leading to its square courtyard, it has a sandstone balcony.

Mining and Geology

Vrskmaň is located about 6 km northeast of Chomutov, on the edge of the mining area of the Vršany open-pit mine. West of Vrskmaň was the former Karel lignite mine, also known as Bedřich, which operated from the transition between the 1850s and 1860s until 1885.

A geopark with examples of North Bohemian rocks is located in the northern part of Vrskmaň. Its exhibition also includes finds from the quarry at Dobkovičky and from the area of the Bohemian Central Uplands. A geological park was also established in Vrskmaň village park to display rocks and minerals from the nearby mines.

Activities and Transport

The Benders Arena in Vrskmaň is an indoor ice rink measuring approximately 300 m². Individual training for hockey players and figure skaters is offered there. A cycle path runs along the trackbed of a disused railway line, carrying cycle route 3114 from Chomutov towards Zaječice. Cycle route 3106 connects Vrskmaň with Vysoká Pec via the dam of the Újezd Reservoir and continues from there to Jezeří.

Vrskmaň is served by public buses as part of the Integrated Transport System of the Ústecký kraj Region; regular bus connections operate to Chomutov and Jirkov.

Community Life

At the harvest festival organized by the municipality of Vrskmaň, visitors have the opportunity, among other things, to view agricultural machinery. The municipality also organizes summer cinema screenings for children and adults.
