Žatčany can be discovered through two distinctive features: the Písky nature reserve in the cadastral area and the historic village centre of Náves.

Natural Area

The Písky nature reserve is a protected area covering 2.24 hectares in the cadastral area of Žatčany. It consists of loose sand areas originating from former oil extraction around 50 to 60 years ago, with scattered trees and denser stands of woody vegetation along the edges. The protected area is safeguarded because of its abandoned spoil heaps and waste rock dumps, as well as being a habitat for psammophilic flora and fauna. Písky can be reached across trackless terrain; from the road, it is more than 250 m away.

Culture and Local History

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Žatčany is considered one of the oldest churches in Moravia; a church probably already stood here in the 12th century. Masonry and supporting pillars from this early construction phase have been preserved in its foundations.

The Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene was built in the Baroque style between 1616 and 1618 and, as part of the church complex, is a protected cultural monument. It contains a wooden altar designed as the Holy Sepulchre, as well as an artificial stalactite cave with a statue of the saint.

Náves is the oldest and largest historic area of the municipality of Žatčany and has the highest concentration of monuments and public buildings. The tradition of Svatomartinské hody, the Feast of Saint Martin, has also been maintained in Žatčany for around 400 years. The Slavkovské bojiště landscape and heritage conservation zone also extends into the cadastral area of Žatčany.

Educational Trail and Cycle Routes

The Žatčany včera a dnes educational trail comprises 15 information boards and forms a circular route just under 7 km long. It also offers interesting information for visitors to the municipality, but is primarily intended for local residents.

In Žatčany, the Brněnská vinařská cyklostezka intersects with a locally signposted cycle route. The Bitva u Slavkova educational trail route also passes through Žatčany.
