Šatov: Wine, Fortifications and Holiday Apartments
Above Šatov lies the Malovaný sklep, a wine cellar built into a sandstone slope. Three-dimensional paintings decorate the cellar; wine was never produced or stored there.
Culture and History
At the southern edge of Šatov lies the Areál československého opevnění v Šatově, featuring the MJ–S 3 “Zahrada” infantry fortification. The site is open to the public.
The reconstructed MJ–S 3 “Zahrada” infantry fortification has been restored to its 1980s condition. It contains two fortress cannons as well as heavy and light machine guns; a 9-metre-high watchtower also stands nearby.
The Boží hrob Chapel, together with the surrounding wall, gate and associated plots of land belonging to the site, is listed as a protected cultural asset.
Šatov is a village heritage zone. Numerous centuries-old houses, wine cellars and wine-press houses are located throughout the cadastral area.
Wine and Trails
The “Za historií, vínem a opevněním ŠATOVA” educational trail is an approximately 3.5-kilometre-long, easy circular route with moderate elevation changes. It can be extended by approximately 1 kilometre.
Its 18 information boards cover the history of the border municipality, the local fortifications and military bunkers, important monuments, and Šatov’s long-standing winemaking tradition.
The educational vineyard of old grape varieties in Šatov displays 19 old varieties that originally grew in Czech and Moravian vineyards. Each variety is marked with an information board and basic details.
This means that different focuses can be considered separately when planning a visit to Šatov: The approximately 3.5-kilometre-long circular route connects history, fortifications, monuments and winemaking through its information boards; the possible extension changes the route length. The educational vineyard, by contrast, focuses on 19 old grape varieties and their labels. The route, thematic offering and variety display can therefore be viewed as separate components of the village.
Wine Tradition
Festival mladých vín is a wine festival held in November and associated with the traditional St. Martin’s winemaking festival.
Dny otevřených sklepů is one of the popular events held in Šatov in June.
Toulky vinicemi Šatova is an event held in August that takes place among the vineyards of Šatov.
June, August and November provide three distinct time windows if you would like to plan your trip around these events. In Šatov, open cellars, an event among the vineyards and a wine festival associated with St. Martin therefore take place in different months. Each date creates its own focus within the village’s wine tradition, rather than repeating the same type of event throughout the year.
Nature
Hluboké louky is a Natura 2000 site with the code CZ0620418.
Those choosing Šatov as a travel destination can initially compare travel dates, apartment size and cancellation conditions when selecting a holiday apartment. Depending on their preferred focus, they can consider different offers side by side.
