Culture and Pilgrimage

The late Gothic pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Kájov is a pilgrimage church. Its present late Gothic form was created between 1471 and 1488; since 1995, the church has been a national cultural monument. The pilgrimage church complex also includes the Chapel of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the rectory and a hospice. The church complex is an exceptionally well-preserved ensemble of buildings from various construction periods.

The historic connection to Český Krumlov is also part of this sacred ensemble: the former pilgrimage road from Český Krumlov to Kájov is a valuable example of a historic Baroque transport route and is closely connected to the pilgrimage complex. In 1667, fifteen granite columns depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary were erected along the road. Below the church in Kájov, at the end of the pilgrimage road, a chapel with a fountain was built between 1686 and 1689. The spring that feeds the fountain is described as healing water and is said to flow from the main altar.

Traditions and Sightseeing

The Kájovská pouť pilgrimage continues to be held every year in October; it takes place on the second Sunday after the second Saturday in October. The new parish museum can be visited by prior arrangement. Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago can obtain a stamp in Kájov and, by prior arrangement, can also stay overnight. The group of statues depicting Saints Thaddeus, Joseph and Anthony of Padua was restored in cooperation with the municipal office.

Walks and Cycling Route

As an excursion suggestion, the municipality of Kájov recommends a walk from church to church via Raziberk. The municipality recommends the “Dubovky” benches as a place to sit and admire the surrounding nature.

The “Znovuobjevené Kájovsko–Boleticko” route is an easy, one-day cycling excursion and a 20-kilometre circular route. It is signposted and, due to its easy terrain, is considered suitable for families, less experienced cyclists and seniors. To the left of the route from Kájov towards Boletice lies the Iron Age hillfort of Raziberk.
