Cizkrajov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Cizkrajov combines preserved architectural heritage with impressive traces of medieval rule. The village’s stone bridge was protected as an immovable cultural monument at the beginning of 2024. As an authentically preserved transportation structure, it documents the region’s architectural qualities as well as its building and construction techniques.
Culture and History
At the northwestern edge of the village lies the site of Cizkrajov Castle, an important archaeological site. It was probably established around 1300 and abandoned in the 1430s or 1440s. Low ramparts, wall remains and mortar remains have been preserved on the site; in addition, a ditch up to 3 m deep and 25 m wide can be discerned.
Another defining structure is the late Gothic Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The two-nave church has a polygonal presbytery and stands in a cemetery enclosed by a perimeter wall. The present church was built between 1500 and 1503 by the master builder Jörg Estreicher, who came from nearby Slavonice.
Pilgrimage and Sacred Sites
The Montserrat pilgrimage church was demolished in 1785 on the orders of Joseph II and rebuilt between 1858 and 1865. Behind the altar in the presbytery there is a well with a spring. The main two-day pilgrimage to Montserrat takes place on the Saturday and Sunday before 15 August.
