In a prominent location in the middle of Smědčice village green stands the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas. The small religious building is designed in the Romantic Eclectic style and combines Gothic, Baroque and Empire elements. The chapel is also an immovable cultural monument.

History

The archaeological site in the centre of Smědčice includes a village and fortification site dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The first mention of the village dates from 1243 and names Abraham de Zmedcich. The fortification, probably founded only at the beginning of the 16th century, is mentioned in 1544 and 1550, and possibly also in 1553; by 1581, it was already uninhabited and in ruins.

The extensive, well-preserved burial-mound cemetery in Smědčice is one of the largest and most significant in the region.

Activities

The Chrást–Strašice 2153 cycling route is 35 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 250 metres. A chapel in Smědčice is listed as a sight along the route.

The 9-kilometre Kokotské rybníky circular trail runs through the surroundings of Smědčice and Litohlavy and has 11 information stations; it is accessible on foot and by bicycle. The Kokotské rybníky educational trail extends between Smědčice and Litohlavy. It can be reached by train as far as Smědčice and then via a 1.5-kilometre footpath to the ponds.

Surroundings

The railway bridge over the Klabava near Smědčice is part of the Radnice–Chrást line. Its riveted steel structure consists of three separate inverted arches. A wide path on the left bank of the Klabava leads to within approximately 20 metres of the railway bridge; along the way, you can reach an observation peninsula.
