Hvožďany is a settlement located on a hill 2.5 km west of Poběžovice.

Nature

Hvožďanská louka is a protected natural monument covering just under 7 hectares on the southeastern slope of Nademlýnský vrch and on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Načetín and Hvožďany. It protects diverse natural meadow vegetation with specially protected plant species. The protected area lies south of Načetín and comprises pastures with species-rich, moisture-loving flowering flora.

The geological locality Český val u Poběžovic lies in the cadastral area of Hvožďany u Poběžovic. It is one of the few well-preserved and large quartz-vein outcrops forming the Český křemenný val.

History and Village Structure

Hvožďany was first mentioned in 1528 as part of the abandoned Starý Herštejn Castle. Later, the settlement came under the rule of Poběžovice. Historically, Hvožďany included mills and a paper factory on the Pivoňka stream. In the past, several mills operated south of Hvožďany near Mlýnský potok.

Hvožďany preserves the layout of a circular village green with a village pond. A branch of the road from Poběžovice to Mnichov crosses the spacious village green of Hvožďany.

Paths and Orientation

A hiking trail and several cycle paths pass through Hvožďany. They include cycle path 2281. The first section of the long-distance Zlatá stezka trail, route 14, also runs through Hvožďany and Mnichov to Pivoň, from Poběžovice to Bělá nad Radbuzou.

The Český val u Poběžovic rock outcrop lies approximately 1.5 km west of Poběžovice on the road to Mnichov, 250 m beyond the turn-off to Hvožďany. It is accessible by car without restriction; the access road reaches to within 250 m of the locality.
