Šťáhlavy brings history to life in an unusually tangible way: with châteaux, castle ruins, a distinctive organ, and educational trails that commemorate people and places from various periods.

Culture and History

Kozel is a Neoclassical hunting château built at the end of the 18th century under the direction of architect Václav Haberditz for its patron, Jan Vojtěch Černín. Šťáhlavy Château also reflects changing architectural styles: it is an example of a rural Renaissance building that was altered by Baroque additions. The Šťáhlavy château grounds include a park.

The ruins of Lopata Castle were probably founded by Heřman of Litice between 1367 and 1377 on the site of a prehistoric settlement. They are currently part of the F. X. France educational trail. The archaeological educational trail in the Kozelské polesí commemorates F. France, a prominent 19th-century amateur archaeologist and gardener at Kozel Château.

A distinctive feature of Šťáhlavy is the organ in the Church of St. Adalbert: it was built in 1856 by organ builder Ferdinand Guth from Čistá. Because of the low ceiling, the largest pipes are positioned horizontally above the choir, beneath the choir floor; this arrangement is considered unique in the world.

Landscape and Trails

The surroundings of Kozel Château form an extensive landscape park whose present appearance was shaped in the 1870s by gardener František Xaver Franz. The entire Kozel Château grounds and all visitor areas are wheelchair accessible.

The Okolo Kozlu educational trail begins at the edge of the forest by Lopatský Pond below Kozel Château and ends at the tourist signpost above the upper château gate.
