Bolevec: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Bolevec lies on the northern outskirts of Plzeň and combines the ten ponds of the Bolevecké rybniční soustavu with protected moorland, forest and wetland landscapes, as well as sites of particular cultural and historical significance.

Nature

The Petrovka Nature Reserve encompasses the valley of the Bolevecký potok west of the Plzeň–Ledce road, adjacent southern slopes with stands of pine, and geomorphological features. It protects a pine ecosystem containing the gene pool of a local Scots pine ecotype, one of the oldest moors in the Plzeň region, wet meadows, and numerous protected or endangered species.

Bolevec is also home to the Kamenný rybník Nature Reserve, where 165 species of higher plants have been recorded. More than 60 different pine species from around the world grow in the Sofronka Arboretum. Among other things, the arboretum serves as a venue for forest education programmes; from two observation platforms, visitors can watch fallow deer in a forest enclosure.

Trails and Water

The Olympijský okruh runs for around 4 km around Velký Bolevecký rybník. The blue-marked trail is therefore considered less demanding. The red-marked Kolem rybníků trail is 5 km long and is considered more demanding. It starts at the terminus of tram line 1 or at the car park near Plzeň-Bolevec railway station.

The two tourist trails around the Bolevecké rybníky are signposted with information panels and are suitable for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users. The Bolevecké rybníky are used for swimming in summer. The Spejbl and Hurvínek educational trail starts and ends at Šídlovský rybník, is 5.5 km long and includes ten stations with tasks for children and adults.

Culture and History

The Kolomazná pec technical monument is located in the Bolevec moorlands. It is an important technical monument dating from the mid-18th century and commemorates the production of tar and other products through the dry distillation of wood. At the same time, it is considered the best-preserved tar kiln complex in the Czech Republic. The Kolomazná pec is part of the Sigmondova naučná stezka educational trail and illustrates the historical processing of natural raw materials and the production of tar.

The U Matoušů farmstead complex includes a large residential building, stables, a two-storey masonry granary and a large barn; the surviving buildings are predominantly of Neoclassical origin. The farmstead is part of the Bolevec village heritage conservation zone. The U Matoušů Open-Air Museum in Plzeň-Bolevec is a national cultural monument and documents the development of rural folk architecture and the way of life in the Plzeň region from the 18th to the 20th century. Freely accessible exhibitions can be viewed in the granary and the barn.
