Culture and history

Sopotnice is home to the Church of St. Zikmund, originally a Gothic building from the second half of the 14th century. It was later remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century, in the Baroque style in 1712, and in the Neo-Gothic style in 1912.

During the remodelling of Kostel sv. Zikmunda in 1912, the nave was demolished and a new Neo-Gothic nave was built according to a design by Bóža Dvořák. Kostel sv. Zikmunda also has a Baroque square sacristy and a square chapel on the southern side of the nave.

Next to the church stands Sopotnice’s freestanding Renaissance bell tower, dating from 1573. On the southern side, in front of the gate to the parish complex, there is the sandstone group “Sousoší Krucifixu s Pannou Marií Bolestnou”. The reconciliation cross “Smírčí kříž v Sopotnici před kostelem” stands in Sopotnice in front of the church.

Nature and landscape

The important landscape feature VKP č. 75 “Bledule pod Křibem” is located in Sopotnice. Orlice Nature Park extends to a very limited extent into the north-western part of Sopotnice’s cadastral area. The European protected area CZ0530503 Litice extends into the north-western part of the Sopotnice area.

Velká Suchá mountain is located in the surroundings of Sopotnice, as is Řetová mountain. Homolka hill [Potštejn] lies in the immediate vicinity of Sopotnice. Strýc mountain is located in the wider regional surroundings of Sopotnice.

Geographical location

Sopotnice is situated on road I/14 in the Česká Třebová–Ústí nad Orlicí–Hradec Králové corridor.

Event

The recurring event “Přes tři hrady” starts and ends in Sopotnice at the sports field. The 2026 edition names the Sopotnice local branch of KČT as the organiser.
