Sloupnice combines a long history with remarkable architectural heritage and surroundings where organized hikes and, in suitable weather, cross-country skiing trips take place. The development of the village is closely linked to the Sloupnický stream: during the High Medieval colonization, an extensive forest-strip village was established here, one of the largest village foundations in the Orlickoústecko area.
History and Architectural Heritage
A striking local example of modern architecture is the Sokolovna in Sloupnice. It was built in 1930 as a sports building designed by the local architect Vojtěch Vanický, in the style of Czech architectural modernism influenced by Dutch brick architecture. The Sokolovna has been a protected historic monument since 3 November 2014. In addition to sports activities, it hosts theatre performances, balls, concerts and other cultural events.
Several religious buildings illustrate different periods of the village’s history. The Church of Saint Nicholas in Sloupnice is a rural church of Gothic origin without a tower, rebuilt in the Baroque style around 1712 into its present form. The Evangelical Church bears witness to the establishment of churches of tolerance shortly after the promulgation of the Patent of Toleration in 1781. An unusual open chapel is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk: it takes the form of a canopy over a Baroque statue dating from 1769.
Socha Svobody is a monument to the victims of the First World War dating from the 1920s. After the Second World War, it was also dedicated to the victims of that war from the surrounding area.
