Landscape and Geographical Setting

Opatovec lies on the main European watershed. Because of its windward location, the village is sometimes called “Little Siberia.”

Králova zahrada is a nature reserve in the Opatovec forestry district. It protects wet forest ecosystems where snowdrops are frequently found.

The area around Opatovec includes Zámecká hora and Drašarov, both mountains. In the wider regional area lies Řetová, also a mountain. Nearby there is also Na Vršku [Opatov v Čechách], a hill.

Culture and Architectural History

The Late Baroque Chapel of Saint Wenceslas in Opatovec was built in 1850 and is listed as an immovable cultural monument.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Košíře is a Late Baroque, towerless building from 1793 with two Sanctus poles; it was partially structurally modified in 1844. The gate complex in Košíře became an independent protected cultural monument in December 2007. It is considered a Late Baroque to Classicist design element of a simple rural ecclesiastical ensemble.
