In the centre of Jeníkov, the original development with smallholder homesteads is still recognisable today.

Village History and Townscape

Jeníkov developed as a forest-strip village with homesteads on both sides of the road. The independent settlement group known as “Na dolním konci” is located on the so-called village green and consists of houses formerly belonging to landless residents. The inhabitants’ most important historical occupations were foothill farming, pottery and weaving.

Nature and Landscape

The Louky v Jeníkově area includes wet sedge communities in marsh meadows with reeds. They are located on the site of former ponds that had become silted up. The area also includes transition mires, nutrient-poor calcareous mire hollows, tall-sedge communities, wet meadows with meadow thistles and meadowsweet, seasonally wet purple moor-grass meadows, and mat-grass grasslands with protected and endangered plant and animal species.

Louky v Jeníkově is home to numerous populations of common frogs, green frogs and common toads. The area is also inhabited by common lizards and adders.

In the vicinity of Jeníkov lies Pešava to the north, which, at 697 m, is the highest elevation in the Železné hory. Also nearby, the hill near Jeníkov offers views towards Kameničky, Žákova hora and Devět skal near Herálec.

Chapel and Local History

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas stands in the centre of Jeníkov. It dates from 1900 and was built on the site of an earlier wooden bell tower. The chapel was reconstructed and has a wrought-iron fence made by the artistic blacksmith Pavel Jekl; it was consecrated in 2010. It belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Kameničky. The municipality also offers an online tour of the exhibition “Jeníkov v proměnách času”.

Geographical Location

Jeníkov lies on Road 343 between Hlinsko and Svratka.
