Velký Újezd: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At the foot of the Oderské vrchy hills, Velký Újezd lies on a gently sloping hillside. The source of the Odra is located in the vicinity of Velký Újezd, about six kilometres from the town.

Experiences

The Memoriál Jaroslava Švarce offers hiking routes of 6, 10, 17, 25, 35 and 50 kilometres; the start and finish are at the TJ Sokol sports field in Velký Újezd. The KČT organises the Memoriál Jaroslava Švarce as an IVV and Turistická-200 hiking event. It has been organised every June as a long-distance hiking event since 1968.

The traditional Velkoújezdské hody festival always takes place around 15 August. In addition, since 1976, TJ Sokol in Velký Újezd has regularly organised an evening march in honour of 28 October.

Culture

The Church of St James the Greater is the parish church of the Velký Újezd u Olomouce parish and a Baroque sacred building. It acquired its present form in 1749–1751; during this period, it was built according to the design of the architect Mikuláš Thalherr. Since 1958, the Podhoran theatre group has staged theatre premieres.

Geographical Setting

Velký Újezd lies on an old trade route with a ford between Olomouc and Lipník nad Bečvou. The town has good bus connections for public transport.

History

Historic buildings include the Vrchnostenský špitál from 1749 and the Poštovní přepřahací stanice from 1791. The Panny Marie Lurdské Chapel is one of the cultural monuments of Velký Újezd.

Homemade Tvarůžky were produced in Velký Újezd from 1895; this production ended after the Second World War.
