Velké Heraltice Castle has a complex building history dating from the late 13th to the 19th century and is one of the most significant castle sites in the Opava region. The castle complex also includes an orangery.
Culture and History
The medieval church in Velké Heraltice was built in the second half of the 13th century or during the 14th century. Its crypt contains three wooden coffins holding priests who worked there in the 18th century. The church organ is also of historical importance: it was built in 1756 by the organ builder J. S. Staudinger from Andělská Hora and is considered the third-oldest organ in the region.
Next to the church, in the cemetery by the perimeter wall, is the family crypt of the Bellegarde family. It was probably built in the last third of the 19th century and takes the form of a one-sided colonnade with five arches on columns with Doric capitals.
Nature and Landscape
The Heraltický potok locality is a meandering watercourse with oxbow lakes and wet meadows. This habitat is home to the rare brook lamprey.
In Hůrky, there is a unique mixed forest stand of varying ages, predominantly consisting of the original Sudeten larch population.
Routes and Connections
The road connecting the towns of Opava and Bruntál runs through Velké Heraltice. The Radegast Opava cycling circuit also passes through the town. East of Velké Heraltice, a yellow-marked hiking trail can be reached via Kamenec.
