Velké Hamry lies on the southeastern edge of the Jizera Mountains. The Kamenice River flows through the town, while distinctive viewpoints open up views across the mountainous landscape and its further horizons.

Landscape and Views

The 787-metre-high Muchov has been developed as a natural viewpoint. From there, views extend across the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, the Ještěd Ridge and the Bohemian Paradise. The distinctive rocks of Muchov consist of two-mica granite, known as Tanvald granite.

The Terezínka rock viewpoint can be reached from the Kamenice Valley. Fifty-five steps lead to it; at the top, views open up of the ridges of the Jizera Mountains.

Routes Through the Surrounding Area

A pedestrian route from Velké Hamry to Tanvald avoids the heavy road traffic either via Popelnice or through the forest above the railway line via Marjánka. From Svárov, a footpath also leads through Parýz, along the valley by the Ješkrabec stream, to Rejdice.

History and Monuments

The former names Hamersko, Dolení Hamr and Hoření Hamr are derived from ironworks that probably stood there in the 13th and 14th centuries. The monument to the Svárov Strike, erected in 1963, commemorates the 1870 textile workers’ strike. The monument is protected as a cultural monument.

The Pietà in Mezivodí is a late Baroque niche chapel in Velké Hamry II, at the turn-off from the main road to Muchov. It is an artistically and culturally valuable monument of a folk character and is listed in the central register of immovable cultural monuments. The life-size Pietà ensemble stands among chestnut trees opposite the factory.

Among the preserved historical monuments of Velké Hamry is a 18th-century Chapel of Saint Wenceslas. The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas in Velké Hamry II is a late Baroque niche chapel at the turn-off from the main road to Muchov.

Construction of the spinning mill in Mezivodí, formerly Liebigovy závody, began in 1907; operations started in 1908, and the building retains its original appearance. Christmas and Easter Masses are held annually in the Chapel of Saint Anne, as well as a Mass on 5 July commemorating Jan Hus. A children’s choir also gives an annual Christmas concert there. Masses are regularly celebrated in Saint Wenceslas Church.

The two-storey corner house near the square has an L-shaped floor plan, gabled roofs and a shallow, tower-like two-storey bay window on volute consoles with a sheet-metal onion dome.

Energy and Technology

The Energy Museum is located on the grounds of the Miček carpentry workshop at Bohdalovice 79, Velké Hamry–Mezivodí. It displays a Francis boiler turbine with a generator from 1907, a model biogas plant, and various turbines and generators shown in cutaway form. The offerings include practical demonstrations of renewable energy generation and educational programmes for schools.
