Kryštofovo Údolí combines remarkable buildings and living traditions with paths into the surrounding forests. The present-day Church of Saint Christopher was built between 1683 and 1684 by the carpenter Michl Schöbel from nearby Žibřidice together with his helpers. Its church grounds include a Baroque vicarage, a mortuary and a bell tower. There are no regular tourist tours in the church during the year; however, it is possible to look inside through the glazed doors.
Culture
The Nativity Scene Museum displays more than 90 nativity scenes. The museum also includes a mechanical Tyrolean nativity scene created by the carpenter Franc Pohl around the turn of the 19th century. In the centre of the village stands Jírův betlém, an outdoor nativity scene that has been on display there since 1999. It is 16 metres long, and its figures are up to 3 metres high.
Also in the centre is the Hodinová věž, housed in a former transformer station. The structure has 14 bells. Annual recurring events include Údolský masopust, a procession of masks and costumes accompanied by music from the Jizera folk ensemble, as well as Údolská pouť. This takes place every year on the last weekend in July and has been celebrated, with some interruptions, since 1862.
History
The Novinský Viaduct is 230 metres long and has 14 arches. It is a state-protected technical monument and a railway viaduct.
Nature and Trails
The Chapel of Saint Christopher can be reached from the centre of the village via a green-marked hiking trail that leads uphill into the forests. From Kryštofovo Údolí, the railway viaduct can be reached on foot via local paths and roads. In winter, the children's ski area offers a ski school as well as ski and snowboard equipment rental.
