In Harrachov, nature observation, glassmaking history, mining and winter sports come together. The town’s distinctive features can be discovered in museums, educational trails and sports facilities with very different focuses.
Culture
The Šindelka exhibition is open to visitors interested in forestry and hunting. It includes an overwintering enclosure for wild animals and 32 taxidermied animals.
The Harrachov Glass Museum presents a historically and technologically coherent collection of historic glass from the production of the Harrachov glassworks. The collection documents more than 300 years of glassmaking in Nový Svět and comprises more than 5,000 exhibits. The Harrachov glassworks complex also offers a brewery tour and a beer tasting for glassworkers.
The Šindelka Harrachov Information Centre sells maps and guidebooks for the Krkonoše Mountains and recommends excursion routes as well as other exhibitions and museums of KRNAP. The Harrachov Mining Museum displays tools and equipment from mining, ore from local deposits and preserved mining machinery from the 20th century. The museum’s tour adit is approximately 1,000 metres long and has an average temperature of 7 to 9°C.
Nature
Along the Naučná Včelí stezka educational trail, information boards explain the lives of bees and beekeepers. The entire route is lined with beehives containing live bees; the hives are arranged according to the historical development of beekeeping.
The Naučná stezka Rybárna educational trail leads through the picturesque Anenské Valley to the place where Count Jan Nepomuk Harrach founded a trout farm. Along Harrachov’s ponds, it offers a peaceful walk that even very young children can manage. Interactive wooden panels explain which organisms live in and around the pond.
The Mumlava Waterfall is a natural attraction in Harrachov and is located 1.5 kilometres from the town centre.
Activities
The cross-country skiing area includes a 2.2-kilometre prepared and artificially snow-covered circuit homologated for professional sports. The Mammoth K180 ski jump in Harrachov is one of the six largest ski jumps in the world; World Cup ski-flying competitions are held there. The Harrachov cable car is available to visitors year-round.
