Untersandau (Dolní Žandov) combines a long history with landscapes, traditional customs and remarkable buildings in the surrounding area. Dolní Žandov was first mentioned in written records in 1197 and was granted town status between 1261 and 1278.

History

One prominent historical trace is Borschengrýn Castle. It was built after 1374, conquered and destroyed in 1452. The restored chapel is also one of the defining historic sites and continues to serve the pilgrimage tradition.

Landscape

The northeastern part of the municipality of Dolní Žandov extends into the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area. The districts of Podlesí and Úbočí are located there. The mountains Lysina, Streicher Rang and Pfaffenbühl are also situated around Dolní Žandov. Podhorni vrch lies in the wider regional surroundings of Dolní Žandov.

Culture and Routes

The traditional customs include the annual raising and felling of the maypole in Dolní Žandov, Salajna and Podlesí. Salajna is a particularly vivid example of regional architectural heritage: the village is a rural heritage zone with scattered Cheb farmsteads and preserved half-timbered buildings. Most of the oldest houses date from the late 18th or early 19th century.

The Gahmühle water mill in Salajna was founded in the 17th century. Its present appearance, with half-timbered gables, dates from the second half of the 18th century; the water mill is considered an important example of Cheb folk architecture.

The connection between Dolní Žandov and Salajna can also be explored by bicycle: National Cycle Route No. 36, the Český les Magistrale, reaches Dolní Žandov at the turn-off by the railway station and then continues along the stream to Salajna.

The Church of St. Michael in Bad Brambach is also located in the wider regional surroundings. The Center of Europe monument is situated near Dolní Žandov.
