Vysoké Veselí: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Vysoké Veselí educational trail leads via Kákovice, Veselský háj, Velešice, Sběř and Kozojedy to Češov and back via Volanice. Including its branches, it is 18.6 km long and is suitable for hiking as well as for cyclists, including those using trekking, cross or mountain bikes.

Nature and Landscape

The Veselský háj natural monument protects valuable oak-hornbeam forests as well as old acidic oak forests with pedunculate oaks (Quercus robur). The Smrkovák pond, an important ornithological area, lies within the natural monument.

Veselský háj provides suitable conditions for critically endangered plants such as the superb pink (Dianthus superbus L. s.s.) and the Siberian iris (Iris sibirica), as well as for other specially protected species such as the variegated monkshood (Aconitum variegatum) and the violet helleborine (Epipactis purpurata).

Culture and History

The first written mention of the Church of St Nicholas of Tolentino in Vysoké Veselí dates from 1335. Its present appearance derives from a Baroque church built in 1770, which was later remodelled in the Empire style after a fire. The oldest house in Vysoké Veselí is a large multi-storey Renaissance house with an arcade, built in 1586.

A sandstone column with a Pietà stands in the village square beside a through road. The Pietà on the Pietà column is an unsigned sculpture from 1808. Another sandstone column with a statue of Saint Wenceslas stands in Vysoké Veselí on the road to the château; the statue of Saint Wenceslas on the Wenceslas column is an unsigned sculpture from 1807.

The Pietà column is one of the sculptures regarded as valuable evidence of the survival of Baroque forms in rural surroundings until the beginning of the 19th century. The original fortress was converted after 1745 into a Baroque château, modernised to its present form; a garden was laid out on the site of the fortifications.

Events and Information

The Vackovo Vysoké Veselí concert, traditionally held at the end of June, presents leading performers in the field of brass music. The local public library is the cultural information centre of Vysoké Veselí.
