Velké Petrovice combines a turbulent local history with striking landscape formations in the area around the Metuje. In the Metuje valley near Petrovice, a battle between Catholic Silesians and Hussites took place in 1420.

History

Petrovice was probably founded by the Lords of Dubá at the end of the 13th century. 250 Hussites are said to have fallen in the battle near Petrovice in 1420.

In the immediate vicinity of Petrovice, traces of the medieval Vlčinec Castle can be found at the southern end of the Vlčinec rocky spur. Visible circular ditches and ramparts of the fortifications of the former Vlčinec guard castle have been preserved.

Nature

In the immediate vicinity of Petrovice, Vlčinec is a high, narrow rocky spur with chalk rock outcrops above a meander of the Metuje. In the immediate vicinity of Petrovice, Vlčinec also features marlstone rock faces 5 to 8 metres high. The marlstone of Vlčinec contains fossil remains of animals from the Cretaceous sea.

Getting Around

On a cycling trip in the Kladské Pomezí region, you can enjoy beautiful views from the road above Velké Petrovice. The hiking route from Teplice nad Metují via Skály, Čáp and Stárkov to Velké Petrovice leads to the Velké Petrovice bus stop and then to Police nad Metují railway station.
