Discover Temny Dul: Aichelburg, Chapel and Trails

Temný Důl draws attention to the reconstructed Aichelburg forest castle, which stands on a rocky spur high above Temný Důl. The chapel, industrial history and trails can be considered separately when planning a visit.

Culture

The masonry Chapel of St. Anne has a pyramidal roof topped by a bell tower. It was built in 1752 by Johann Bensch and his wife. The Chapel of St. Anne is considered one of the oldest religious structures in the eastern Krkonoše region.

Lesní hrádek Aichelburg was ceremonially opened on 9 September 1863; a bust of Count Berthold was placed in the stone castle hall. The bust of Count Berthold displayed in Lesní hrádek Aichelburg was made after a painting by F. Hauptfleisch, a model maker from the glassworks in Temný Důl.

The former Dixova brusírna dřeva wood-grinding mill in Temný Důl has been a protected cultural monument since 1996. It is a three-winged industrial complex on the Úpa River with an octagonal chimney and a former water inlet.

The chapel, castle hall and industrial complex display different architectural details: the religious building with its roof structure is followed by the stone hall with the bust and the three-winged complex on the river. Thus, sacred, historical and industrial testimonies stand side by side in Temný Důl.

Trails

The Stations of the Cross to Stará hora run for 680 metres from the road to a spring and overcome an elevation gain of 120 metres.

The route therefore connects the named destination with two signposted forms of travel, without presenting the trails as the same offering.

The Aichelburg walking route is 8.2 kilometres long. The Aichelburg Trail was extended in 2009 via the settlement of Honzův Potok. The different route lengths help visitors align their personal day planning with a short section or a longer route. While the Stations of the Cross describe a clearly limited section of 680 metres with 120 metres of elevation gain, the longer distance is the focus of the Aichelburg walking route.

Visiting

Visitors can borrow keys for Lesní hrádek Aichelburg at the Veselý výlet information centre in Temný Důl or in Pec pod Sněžkou and use them to open the castle hall themselves.

Parking is available at the Veselý Výlet information centre; the excursion to the Stations of the Cross begins there.
