The Městské muzeum Sedlčany presents the Sedlčany region in its permanent exhibition, from prehistory through the Middle Ages and the early modern period to the present day. The archaeological finds range from the Bronze Age and Iron Age to the Celtic oppidum of Hrazany. The permanent exhibition at the Městské muzeum Sedlčany concludes with a memorial dedicated to the life and work of the composer Josef Suk.

Culture and History

The tradition of the historic ROSA festival was revived in Sedlčany in 1990. Since 1994, ROSA has been held regularly in June as Sedlčany’s town festival. The international Sukovy Sedlčany music festival is also held every year.

The Stará radnice in Sedlčany now houses the town museum. A Gothic column has been preserved in its cellar.

Kostel sv. Martina was first mentioned in writing on 1 February 1364. The Early Gothic parish church dates from the third quarter of the 13th century and was built by the construction lodge of Milevsko Monastery. Its Baroque furnishings include an altar from 1704 with a painting by J. Umlauf added later. The church was surrounded by a massive defensive wall with buttresses, which was probably up to six metres high.

Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, also known as Církvička, is a Baroque cemetery church built in 1732–1734 on the site of an older Gothic chapel. Církvička stands on a hill on the northern side of Sedlčany.

Experiences

Every Saturday, the Hvězdárna Josefa Sadila Sedlčany offers public night sky observations. Direct observations with the large telescope are accompanied by projected images of the objects being observed, as well as explanations and discussions covering various areas and topics in astronomy.

The Sportovní areál Luční has a 560-metre-long track for inline skating and cycling. It offers younger visitors climbing structures and a pyramid, as well as parkour obstacles and an outdoor gym for teenagers and adults.

Trails

The Sukova pěší stezka begins in Sedlčany and leads through the valley of the Mastník stream to Josef Suk’s birthplace in Křečovice. The Sukova pěší stezka also leads to the Drahoušek lookout tower. The signposted Sukova pěší stezka from Sedlčany to Křečovice is 11 km long.
