Popovice: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Popovice is home to the Gothic Church of St. James, dating from the 14th century.

History and architecture

The Church of St. James has been documented since 1352. Around 1730, a side chapel with Baroque furnishings was added to the south side of its nave. The tower on the west façade has a bell-shaped roof covered with shingles. It houses a historic bell made in 1512 by Bartoloměj from Nové Město Pražské.

West of the village church, Popovice Water Castle stands by the mill pond. It was rebuilt in the 18th century into its present form. Part of the original Gothic perimeter wall has been preserved by the pond on its east side. Fragments of Renaissance sgraffito decoration can be found on the north wing and its risalit; in the courtyard, the north wing is adjoined by a Gothic defensive tower with a modern brick superstructure.

The settlement of Popovice was first mentioned in writing in 1295. Masses are celebrated in the Church of St. James at 10:00 a.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month.

Traditions and events

Traditionally, Zabíjačkové hody takes place in Popovice during the first week of November. The 2024 Masopust procession took place exclusively in Popovice and included almost 30 masks.

The Popovice Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1887 and performed an amateur play for the first time on May 11, 1902. Hasičské odpoledne took place in Popovice in 2018, 2019 and 2023. At Hasičské odpoledne 2023, there were nearly ten competition stations and a slide for children; in 2018, inflatable boat rides were offered on the local pond.

A green-marked hiking trail passes through Popovice. Cycling Route 0068 passes through a lime-tree avenue in Popovice. Cycling Route 0068 is recorded at kilometer 27.50 in Popovice.
