Chržín is nicknamed “český Betlém” (“Czech Bethlehem”) and combines a long settlement history with notable traces surrounding the Church of St. Clement. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1292. Settlement in the surrounding area has been documented since the Neolithic period, approximately since the 5th to 6th millennium BC.
Culture and History
On a hill north of Chržín stands the Church of St. Clement, surrounded by a cemetery. Its walls are adorned with Romanesque murals depicting the legend of Saint Clement. The church was probably originally built in the early Gothic style and was rebuilt and modified in the Baroque style in 1691 and 1761. It received its tower in 1781 and was regothicised in 1879.
The cemetery contains the grave of Antonín Strnad, a former rector of Charles University and a renowned astronomer. South of the church, archaeological excavations have identified a field of cremation burials in burial mounds. A possible Celtic hillfort is also suspected on the “Za kostelem” plateau above Chržín.
On 23 May 2025, the Church of St. Clement hosted Noc kostelů, a traditional event in the Czech Republic. On that day, it was open to visitors from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; tours were available.
Landscape and Trails
The Chržinský rybník pond lies almost in the centre of the village. A forest now occupies the reclaimed site of a former sand pit. Chržín’s hillside location offers a picturesque view of the church and the village below, visible from a distance.
A green-marked hiking trail runs through the Chržín area from Velvary railway station to Nové Ouholice. The Dvořákova stezka is a cycling and hiking trail in the Chržín area. In addition, the “Okružní cesta z Kralup za slanou i sladkou chutí” cycling loop passes through Chržín and continues towards Nová Ves, Staré Ouholice and Miřejovice.
