Park and estate history

The Dvorac Janković complex in Suhopolje was built in 1775 as a large Late Baroque estate. The surrounding park covers 7.99 hectares and is a protected monument of garden architecture. The park is easily accessible from the D2 highway; tourist signage, information boards and municipal facilities are also provided. The Dvorac Janković visitor centre presents the history of Suhopolje and the Janković family. There is also a souvenir shop.

The Crkva sv. Terezije Avilske has been protected as a cultural monument since 1969 and is an example of Neoclassical architecture. Its notable furnishings include six wooden, Neoclassical candlesticks, which are considered rare in Croatia. The crypt contains the sarcophagi of its builder, Ivan Nepomuk Jankovich, his wife Terezija and their son. Cabuna has its own architectural history, too: the Crkva Kraljice sv. Krunice was built in 1906 and consecrated in June 1907; it was originally dedicated to Saint Clotilde. The Dvorac Janković in Cabuna is protected as a cultural property, but is in very poor and dilapidated condition.

Nature and local discoveries

The nature of the Općina Suhopolje is also marked by observations of rare and noteworthy species. A 2018 monitoring survey recorded the Large Copper butterfly in wet meadows near Pepelane. In Croatia, it is considered potentially endangered, while the European IUCN Red List classifies it as Least Concern. West of Cabuna, on the slopes of Bilogora, there is a colony of European Bee-eaters with 180 to 200 breeding pairs. These specific connections to local places and species offer nature lovers further ways to get to know Suhopolje and its surroundings.

Festivals and group activities

If you enjoy active days, make a note of the BUB – Biciklom u Bukovu recreational cycling tour, held annually in September. It runs from Suhopolje towards Bukova and is open to all age groups. In June, the Grofov cvjetni bal flower parade passes through Suhopolje, ending in Suhopolje Park with music, singing and dancing. The two events offer different highlights: a group bike ride and a festive parade through the town.

The traditional Suhopoljski kotlić celebrates venison stew. Amateur cooks compete, and visitors can try the culinary competition or sample the finished dish. In September, Dani oraha brings together stalls selling traditional walnut specialities, music and a competition for the best-decorated stall.
