Tea, vineyards and local character

The “Kuća čaja – Oaza mira” visitor center in Špišić Bukovica has six themed tea-tasting rooms. Visitors can sample tea there. This makes the center a special place for anyone who likes to combine a stay with a specific local experience.

Viticulture is also part of the landscape: vineyards stretch across the slopes of Bilogora within the municipality. In Vukosavljevica, the Vinski “Podrum” has been a meeting place for experienced local winegrowers for years. Those who plan their trip around the landscape and local character will find a different focus here than on a stay centered mainly on historical themes.

History in different forms

The Špišić Bukovica Local Heritage Collection presents the life and development of the village across different periods. It features objects, photographs and documents. The collection includes archaeological finds dating from prehistoric times through the era of nomads to the first houses. Other exhibits relate to food and traditional life, as well as weaving and textile production. The collection therefore offers a view extending from early traces of human settlement to activities and everyday objects from later periods.

Another historic structure is Gradina, locally known as Turski grad: a very well-preserved medieval fortification with eight defensive terraces and a plateau. An earthen embankment that supplied a large reservoir has also survived. Traces of the Roman road from Ptuj to Osijek are also visible in the municipality, between Vukosavljevica and Mali Zagreb. A Benedictine monastery stood at the Zidine archaeological site; it is considered one of Croatia’s oldest monasteries. These places and finds offer different historical perspectives, from traces of Roman roads to medieval fortifications and monastic history.

The parish church of St. John the Baptist in Špišić Bukovica was built in 1753. It adds a specific construction date to the area’s historical themes. Traditions and places to visit

Annual traditions include the Ivanjski Kresovi: the bonfires are lit in Čimen Park on the eve of St. John’s Day, June 24. The traditional Bučijada and Jesenski sajam were also held on October 18 at the market and in the Hrvatski dom in Špišić Bukovica. For your trip planning, these offer different insights into local customs and events; the date given for October is the date of this event.

If you would rather focus more on nature than history, Kinkovo is a place to visit where visitors can enjoy the peace and quiet of Slavonian forests. Stations for renting regular bicycles and e-bikes have been set up at the Kurija “Špišić” cycling rest stop. In addition, the traditional individual float-fishing tournament, Memorijal Martincević–Ratković, was held at the Zidine retention basin. These examples reflect different interests, from tranquil forest scenery and cycling to fishing.

Getting your bearings and nearby places

Both the Podravina highway and the railway line pass through the municipal center of Špišić Bukovica. This is a useful reference point when planning your route, but it does not provide information about individual accommodations or how far away they are. So choose your holiday apartment based on the part of the municipality and the experiences that matter most to you.
