The regional park within the Municipality of Pitomača contains four protected significant landscapes: Močvarno stanište Vir covers 1.15 ha, Širinski otok 105.65 ha, Jelkuš 291.85 ha and Križnica 803.17 ha. These areas, which vary in size, give the municipality’s natural character concrete definition; Križnica is the largest of the four landscapes listed.
Water is also part of this landscape: the old course of the Drava and the standing waters in Križnica provide a habitat for many fish species. Travel to Križnica also requires special consideration. Its only land connection to the rest of Croatia is a suspension bridge about 2 m wide, with a steel structure and wooden walkway. Literary History and Local Culture
Kuća Petra Preradovića brings together a historic building and an unusual way of presenting its history: the house was built in 1775, and in 1968 one of the first museums dedicated to a writer was established there. It also features an immersive 3D reconstruction of the poet’s birthplace in virtual reality. This interpretation centre thus brings together a real historic site and a digital depiction of the birthplace. Visits are available Monday to Friday by prior appointment. Outside regular opening hours, a visit can be arranged with at least 48 hours’ notice.
Music and regional traditions are also part of the destination’s cultural life. The tambura tradition of Pitomača dates back to the founding of its first tambura ensemble in 1906. The Festival pjesme Podravine i Podravlja promotes new songs inspired by the culture and heritage of Croatian regions along the Drava. On Kladarski breg, TIC Klopotec is home to Croatia’s largest klopotec. A klopotec is a traditional symbol of viticulture in Podravina. By Bike, on Horseback or on the Drava
The cycling routes in the Pitomača destination include EuroVelo 13 – the Iron Curtain Trail. Horseback tours start at Zlatni klas; excursion routes are prepared and a guide is provided. These activities offer different ways to experience the area, without requiring you to limit your trip to a single pursuit.
On the water, Drava Tour Adventure is a three-hour boat trip from Brodić to Križnica along the Drava through Croatia and Hungary. Herds of deer and protected sand martins can be observed along the river. At the Jelkuš sandbank, you can make a short stop to sunbathe on the wild beach. This river trip combines wildlife watching with a break on the riverbank.
Regional Flavours and Choosing the Right Trip
Dani pečenjakov is a summer event in Pitomača. At the end of July or beginning of August, pečenjak—roasted corn—is prepared in various ways and introduced to visitors. For another regional treat, OPG CHRESNO has a wine-tasting venue fully prepared for the tourism market. Together with the klopotec, a symbol of viticulture, it offers another way to experience Podravina culture.
