The Municipality of Omišalj combines striking evidence of the island’s history with trails through Krk’s varied landscapes. The municipality connects the island to the mainland via the Krk Bridge. Trails between the park, lake and coast
Dubec Park is a landscape architecture monument. Landscaped paths and rest areas shape the park; its main path is 995 m long. There are also around 300 m of secondary paths and stone steps connecting Omišalj with the coastal promenade and bathing area. Dubec therefore offers a distinctive way to experience the park landscape and coastal surroundings over a shorter distance. If you prefer a longer hike, try the Omišalj–Vošćica–Rudine–Omišalj Trek: rated as moderate, the 26.1 km route starts and ends in the centre of Omišalj.
Njivice can also be explored through its varied natural features. The path around the lake near the centre is an easy circular route, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Lake Jezero is considered the largest natural freshwater habitat on the island of Krk. Wetland and freshwater vegetation, as well as habitats for birds and fish, are among its distinctive features. If you would rather walk through woodland and cultural landscapes, you can take the Cerova Trail: it leads from Njivice through a downy oak forest, past dry-stone walls and the remains of a Mošun.
Archaeology and history on Krk
The Roman town of Municipium Flavium Fulfinum was founded at Sepen Bay in the 1st century. The Fulfinum Mirine complex includes the remains of this ancient municipium and an early Christian basilica. A hiking trail from Omišalj leads to the archaeological site, combining a cultural and historical experience with the island’s natural landscape. Fortičina Fortress, meanwhile, is based on traces of a late antique or early medieval watchtower. These different sites offer insights into various periods of the past without needing to group them into a single historical era.
You’ll also encounter traces of history on the Cerova Trail: it passes the Mohorov archaeological site, with remains from Roman times. Another educational trail connects Biserujka Cave with Slivanjska Bay. Five information panels accompany the route; it is easy to walk and takes around 30 minutes. This lets you plan your day around a longer hike, an easy circular route or a short educational trail, while keeping the different route details distinct.
Beach, activities and local cuisine
At Kijac pebble beach in Njivice, you’ll find pedal boat rentals and inflatable trampolines in the sea. If you’d like to include these beach activities in your trip, you can make Njivice a focus in its own right, alongside its trails and natural areas. Omišalj and Njivice also have electric bike stations. Bikes can be rented around the clock, every day, using a credit card. For guests interested in boats and yachts, the Nautical Center Liburnija in Omišalj offers a year-round dry marina, a shop and a maintenance service.
Local character is also reflected in the menus in Omišalj and Njivice, which feature fresh fish, local olive oil, Krk sheep’s cheese, lamb and Šurlice. An annual cultural event is the Omišalj Rosette women’s klapa festival, held every year on 4 August in Omišalj Square.
