Culture and History
The parish church of St Sylvester in Kanfanar dates from the 17th century. Its pulpit originally stood in the Basilica of St Sophia in Dvigrad.
Nearby are the preserved remains of Dvigrad, which was first mentioned in 879. The remains are enclosed by two rings of city walls, a city gate and three defensive towers. The Church of St Sophia stands on Dvigrad’s central and highest plateau, at the main square. Its present appearance most likely dates from the 13th century. The Church of St Agatha is also nearby, an early Romanesque building with wall paintings dating from the second half of the 11th century.
Kašteljir is also nearby, a prehistoric archaeological site below a former hillfort settlement.
