Bistritsa: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Bistritsa is connected to Vitosha by hiking trails whose duration and difficulty vary. From the village center, routes lead, among other places, toward Zheleznitsa and Simeonovo; other paths run to Aleko Hut via the corridors of Bistrishko Branishte and the Yanchevska River.

Trails

One published route leads from Bistritsa to Aleko Hut in 3 hours and 15 minutes. It passes by a waterfall, Mencheto, Dolen Karkam, Goren Karkam, and Mecha Polyana.

Nature

The Bistrishko Branishte Reserve lies within Vitosha Nature Park, has protected-area status, and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The reserve contains forests as well as subalpine and alpine grasslands; spruce is the predominant forest tree species.

Access through the Bistrishko Branishte Reserve is permitted only on marked trails between Aleko Hut and the villages of Zheleznitsa and Bistritsa. Visits off the trails require a permit.

Culture

The Bistritsa Monastery of Sts Joachim and Anna can be reached from Bistritsa via a tourist trail or an unpaved track of approximately 2 km. Beneath the narthex of the church is a Late Antique tomb dating to the 4th–5th century; a holy spring is located next to the monastery.

The Bistritsa Culture Center preserves and promotes the heritage and local identity of Bistritsa. It was founded in 1909 and opened as the first community cultural center in Sofia District.

The Bistritsa Babi perform a local repertoire featuring very old songs; experts describe their singing as polyphonic. The repertoire comprises more than 300 songs. UNESCO recognized the Bistritsa Babi as intangible cultural heritage in 2005 and included the tradition on the Representative List in 2008.
