Holiday apartment in Tomislavgrad: hiking trails, Blidinje and culture
The Tomislavgrad area has 155 km of marked mountain hiking trails. The range extends from easy walking paths to challenging mountain trails. Among the notable cultural sites is the monumental Spomen-bazilika sv. Nikole Tavelića with the Franciscan monastery, located in the municipality of Tomislavgrad. Thus, natural experiences and cultural sites are not separate topics standing side by side, but together shape the character of the municipality.
Culture
The complex of the Spomen-bazilika sv. Nikole Tavelića and the sv. Ćirila i Metoda monastery, restored in 1987, includes the Franjevački muzej Tomislavgrad. Using archaeological and epigraphic collections, the museum presents the heritage of the Dalmatians, the Romans and the Middle Ages from the Duvanjsko region. The exhibition area of Karmel sv. Ilije offers another insight into cultural history. It displays more than 120 sets of Croatian folk costumes and pieces of jewellery, as well as costumes and jewellery of other peoples from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Kulturno-informativni centar Tomislavgrad offers concerts, audiovisual and visual arts projects, theatre performances, book presentations and film screenings. The “Dani sv. Nikole Tavelića” event includes a prayer programme, specialist lectures on cultural topics, evenings featuring folklore and traditional customs, as well as musical and stage performances in the courtyard of the Spomen-bazilika and on Trg gange i hajdučke družine. Karmel sv. Ilije also organises and leads spiritual exercises, retreats, seminars and various theological gatherings.
Nature
Blidinje Nature Park is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the area of the central Dinaric Alps. It encompasses the Čvrsnica and Vran mountain ranges and administratively belongs to the municipalities of Posušje, Tomislavgrad, Prozor-Rama and Jablanica, as well as the City of Mostar. During heavy snowdrifts, the road from Posušje is frequently closed; the route from Tomislavgrad to Blidinje is then usually the most reliable and generally passable access road.
Lake Blidinje, the largest mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is located in the nature park. It lies between the large Vran and Čvrsnica mountain ranges. The Šujica is the most important river course in the municipality of Tomislavgrad. It flows through the Šujičko polje and the Duvanjsko polje and is considered a remarkable example of meander formation and a natural phenomenon.
Dahna Cave is a significant biospeleological cave area and is known for the discovery of remains of a cave bear that lived there 20,000 years ago. The cave can only be visited accompanied by speleologists.
Hiking and activities
The Via Dinarica runs through the municipality of Tomislavgrad. The Staza hrvatskih kraljeva is an independent trail: it begins on Lib hill, passes over the summit of Vrlokuk and ends at the Studena rest area in Crvenice. The Put hajdučke družine trail connects the natural beauty of Vran, including Mijatova pećina, with folk legends and historical references to the Hajduks.
Visitors can go canoeing on Lake Blidinje; the lake also provides starting points for various mountain hiking trails into the surrounding mountains. The Šujica is popular with fly fishers because of its indigenous fish species, including trout.
