Holiday apartment in Blažuj – cultural heritage and nature in the Tomislavgrad area

Blažuj makes history visible through specific local sites while also opening up views of the natural and cultural landscapes of the Tomislavgrad area. The Muslim cemetery in Blažuj is listed in Tomislavgrad’s spatial plan as a cultural heritage site from the Ottoman period. Together with medieval traditions, lakes, rivers and caves, it creates a multifaceted picture of this region.

Culture and history

Many consider Blažuj to be the centre of the medieval Franciscan Custody of Duvanjsko between the Cetina and Neretva rivers, based on Mandić’s attribution. Mandić also assigned the medieval toponym Betuzae to Blažuj near Tomislavgrad. The historical tradition explicitly remains open on one point: Blažuj may have been home to a Franciscan monastery that may have been destroyed by the Turks.

In Tomislavgrad, the memorial basilica was built on Duvanjsko polje to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the coronation of the first Croatian king, Tomislav. The Franciscan Museum in Tomislavgrad houses an African collection that is unique throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond. The cemetery in Blažuj was also included in the parish of Tomislavgrad’s agricultural blessing ceremony, “Blagoslov polja”.

Nature and trails

There are 155 kilometres of marked hiking trails in the municipality of Tomislavgrad. The range extends from easy walking paths to challenging mountain trails. The long-distance Via Dinarica route also passes through the same municipality. This places different types of trails and a long-distance route side by side without reducing them to a single level of difficulty.

The Tomislavgrad area has a total of 1,190 metres of explored cave passages. The Dahna cave is subject to a clear condition: it can only be visited accompanied by cave explorers.

Lakes, rivers and birdlife

Lake Buško offers opportunities for fishing; camping and water sports are possible at Marinovac sandy beach during the summer months. The Buško blato area contains one of the largest gathering areas for waterbirds in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Šujica River offers opportunities for fly-fishing. Lake Blidinje has starting points for various hiking trails into the surrounding mountains.

Regional culture

Blažuj is part of the local media series “Tomislavgrad iz zraka”, featuring aerial footage. Another regional facet is the International Kobasijada, a gastronomic event in the Duvno area that attracts participants and guests from Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as neighbouring countries.
