Kupres: Holiday Apartment Amid Mountains and Winter Sports

Kupres connects continental Bosnia and Herzegovina with Croatia, Dalmatia and the Adriatic coast. The municipality lies at an altitude of more than 1,135 metres and is surrounded by 18 mountain peaks reaching between 1,272 and 1,828 metres. The Stožer mountain massif encircles the town of Kupres.

Winter Sports

Adria Ski is a winter sports and sports recreation centre at 1,250 metres above sea level. The ski area has four ski slopes with a combined length of more than 13 kilometres and four ski lifts. Guided panoramic snowmobile tours are also offered below the ski slopes; professional guides provide instruction in driving.

Ski Kraljica is the former Stožer–Vrana ski centre. Its centre includes Kupreška kuća and a hut at the lift’s upper station at just under 1,800 metres, offering views of the plain, the mountains and Kupres. The facilities are complemented by a snow tubing track and an ice rink. Ski Ivan offers easy slopes for beginners and night skiing. It also has a baby lift, a large toboggan run and ski equipment rental.

Cycling and Trails

Bike Park Vrana spans the range from recreational cycling on cross-country routes through all-mountain and freeride to extreme freeride and downhill trails. Around Kupres, there are also ten all-mountain and enduro trails with varying levels of technical difficulty. A shuttle runs to Stožer at 1,760 metres, from where the descents lead down to Kupres at 1,200 metres.

A hiking trail leads from Kupreška kuća to Pločata vrila, with an easy ascent of up to one hour. The viewpoint on Stožer is about an hour’s walk from the centre of Kupres and can also be reached by a private vehicle, preferably one suitable for off-road driving.

Nature and Landscape

Lake Kukavičko jezero is 8 kilometres from the centre of Kupres, is a popular day-trip destination and serves as a swimming lake during the summer months. The glacial lake lies at 1,200 metres above sea level and reaches a maximum depth of around 13 metres. Nearby stands Usađeni kamen, a rock formation about 10 metres high beside the road. A tree grows at its ring-shaped hollowed-out top.

Japage lies west of Kupres, 12 kilometres from the town. The area consists of five sinkholes covering approximately 1 square kilometre; there is also a lake there. Hajdučka vrata is a ring-shaped rock formation between Kupres and Bugojno. Stožer is considered the source of Kupres’s 365 springs.

Those arriving from the direction of Bugojno drive through Kupreška vrata and are greeted there by views of wide fields and meadows.

Culture and Cuisine

Ravanjska vrata in Kupres is UNESCO World Heritage component 1504-020 of the medieval Stećci tombstone graveyards. Another historic site is located in Otinovci: the archaeological site includes preserved and partially reconstructed building remains and has been designed as an open-air archaeological park. The complex includes an early Christian basilica from the 5th century and the Church of Saint John the Baptist from the 19th century. It is designated as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The cultural calendar includes the traditional Kupres Haymaking Cultural Days, known as Strljanica. They take place every year on the first Sunday in July on Kupreško polje. The Kupreška kuća restaurant serves local dishes from Kupres cuisine.
