Clavier: Condroz Landscape, Trails and Culture

Clavier combines the landscape typical of the Condroz with a remarkable density of historical and cultural traces. Hills and hollows shape the scenery, while paths lead through valleys, along ponds and across the open landscape. One characteristic way to discover the Condroz is the Promenade de l'obélisque. It leads over the ridges and through the valleys of the landscape, passes beautiful viewpoints and goes by the obelisk, also known as the Pyramid of Verlée. The long-distance GR 575 trail also runs through Clavier and offers a longer perspective on the region.

There are further distinctive route ideas for shorter or themed excursions. The “Cint-Fontaines et les étangs” hiking route leads to the site of the Maquis de Bagatelle. In Les Avins, the archaeological and artisanal aspects take centre stage. The Musée des Avins preserves archaeological material recovered during excavations in Les Avins. The exhibition on the Battle of Les Avins complements this collection with a historical subject. The finds mentioned include pottery shards, worked flints, a small bronze ring, remains of a brown bear, human remains and burial urns. Direct stone-carving is also practised in Les Avins, particularly using local Petit Granit. In Rue du Centre, gargoyles can be seen that were made by artists from the Les Avins sculpture workshop.

Pailhe also contributes to Clavier’s character through its architectural and local history. The buildings are mostly made of grey limestone; the village lies in a valley and is crossed along its entire length by the Pailhe stream. The outbuildings of Pailhe Castle have survived to this day. The main building was destroyed in the winter of 1944 by a chimney fire accidentally caused by the American occupying forces. A chapel in Saint-Fontaine has been classified since 1944.
