Discover Héron: Trails, Mills and Landscapes along the Meuse

Héron lies between Andenne and Huy, at the transition between the Hesbaye plateau and the banks of the Meuse. This location offers different perspectives for planning your trip: you can follow marked trails, experience landscapes ranging from forests to farmland, and combine historic buildings with regional craftsmanship. Héron has a total of 70 km of marked hiking and cycling routes. Between the Forest, Hesbaye and the Meuse

The Vallées de la Burdinale et de la Mehaigne nature park is also part of the region's attractions. Together with the areas of Braives, Burdinne and Wanze, it extends to the boundaries of the municipality of Héron, near the sources of the Burdinale in Waret-l'Évêque. Historic Trails and Special Places

The Promenade de la Dîme leads through the historic centre of Héron. It also takes you to the secluded, elevated site of the Chapelle Saint-Donat. The chapel was built around 1840 and incorporates an older wayside shrine known as a borne-potale. To this day, it is the setting for a century-old processional tradition. In Couthuin, the Promenade des Châteaux leads, among other places, to the Château d'Envoz. Another notable site is located in the village of Lavoir in the municipality of Héron: the Moulin Ferrières dates from 1745 and is one of the last craft mills still in operation in Wallonia. Milling is traditionally carried out there using stone mills, producing flour of very high nutritional quality. The Moulin Ferrières is also a starting point for hiking and cycling routes. Mountain bikes and electric bicycles are available for hire at the site, allowing you to plan your outings on two wheels as well.

Insights into Craftsmanship and Regional Specialities

The Moulin Ferrières has a tourist information centre with information about local and regional tourism. This makes it a useful stop for an initial overview of possible activities. The site in Lavoir is also suitable for a simple walk. If you would like to combine an outing with a regional speciality, the Château-ferme de Marsinne offers another direct connection to the local food and drink culture: this is where Léopold7 beer is brewed.

For an active trip with hikes and cycling tours, the marked routes and the facilities at the Moulin Ferrières are key attractions. If historic sites and short walks are the priority, the Promenade de la Dîme, the Chapelle Saint-Donat and the Église Saint-Martin take centre stage.
