Quarries and brickworks were added, followed in the 19th century by the extraction and processing of lead, zinc and pyrite.

The Grotte d’Engis is associated with an important palaeoanthropological discovery: in the winter of 1829–1830, Philippe-Charles Schmerling discovered fossilised human remains there. On the boundary between Les Awirs and Engis, there is also a site classified as an exceptional heritage site of Wallonia under the name “Grottes Schmerling”. Those interested in early human history and the geological surroundings can connect these themes particularly vividly in Engis.

Another historical focal point is Thier d’Olne. The site is designated as a protected site by the Walloon Region and is considered practically the only early medieval settlement site in Wallonia to have been excavated so extensively. Museums of fossils and culinary delights

The Musée Jean-Marie Souplet was founded in Engis by mineralogy and speleology enthusiasts. It displays fossils and minerals, as well as a recreated cave with stalactites and stalagmites. The Musée de la Gourmandise presents a completely different side of the town. It contains around 1,200 authentic objects, pieces of furniture and paintings dating from antiquity to the present day.
