Esneux between the Ourthe, hiking trails and culture
Esneux combines the river landscape of the Ourthe with varied hiking trails, cycling routes, a species-rich arboretum and cultural discoveries in Tilff and Ham. For planning your trip, this means you can choose between short walks, longer hikes, a very easy RAVeL route, and historical and natural-history experiences. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Esneux can therefore be selected according to your preferred daily rhythm and the interests of your group.
Hiking trails for different daily plans
Esneux has 16 signposted hiking trails covering a total of 114 kilometres. The selection ranges from « la balade de l'île du Moulin » at 2.2 kilometres to the « randonnée de la Roche aux Faucons » at 11.4 kilometres. This provides both short routes for a manageable outing and longer hikes. The « Ile du Moulin / Les 2 rives » walk is classified as easy and is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
One particularly striking landscape feature is the Roche aux Faucons. From the Butte de Ham, the rock face can be seen in a panoramic view. It lies northwest of the bend in the Ourthe and rises 120 metres above the river. Anyone who enjoys combining a distinctive viewpoint with a specific landscape feature while hiking will find a clear destination here as part of the Esneux experience.
The Ourthe, RAVeL and cycling routes
The RAVeL through Esneux follows the meanders of the Ourthe and its former canal. The route is reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders and is considered very easy because of its relatively flat terrain. For a group with different preferences, it therefore offers an alternative to longer or more demanding routes. The TARPAN project also suggests hiking and cycling routes that respect the area's landscape and cultural assets.
Those looking for a moderately challenging cycling route can consider « La petite boucle de l’Ourthe », which is 18 kilometres long. There are also four VTC circuits ranging from 12.8 to 22.9 kilometres; together, they cover 72 kilometres. These different figures help you adapt your outing to your desired route length and personal level of ability, without limiting yourself to just one way of getting around.
Discover the arboretum and landscape
The Tessenire Arboretum covers more than 3 hectares and contains more than 1,000 species. This makes it the third most species-rich arboretum in Wallonia. In the historic section, a restored municipal path leads through the grounds and provides broad public access to the collections. The arboretum complements the paths along the Ourthe with a natural-history perspective and is suitable as an activity in its own right between more active outings.
Culture in Tilff and Ham
The Musée de l'Abeille in Tilff has been open since April 1974. The natural-history museum is housed in the restored barn of the former Château Brunsode, also known as Château de Tilff. The visit begins with an audiovisual presentation about the activities of worker bees during their various stages of life and the production of honey from nectar collected from flowers. From April to September, visitors can observe the foraging bees' routes and the activities of the worker bees in the hive through two glass-covered beehives.
The Château de Brunsode itself also gives the surroundings a historical character. It dates from the 17th century and is surrounded by a public park with a pond and a restored fountain. The tourism information office also welcomes visitors at Château de Brunsode in Tilff; the building is designed in the Louis XIII style. In Ham, the homogeneous architectural ensemble was protected in 1991. This makes it possible to include nature, architectural history and regional culture in your travel plans.
