Zwingendorf combines rare salt habitats with a distinctive cellar-lane culture and memorial sites commemorating the region’s border history. Anyone wishing to plan a trip combining nature observation, regional history and selected excursions will find a variety of options here. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, the main consideration is therefore whether you would prefer to spend your days in the countryside, exploring cultural attractions, or cycling and walking.

Salt Habitats and Nature Trail

The two nature reserves Glaubersalzsteppe and Saliterweide are located within the cadastral area of Zwingendorf. Their saline soils provide a habitat for rare plants and small animals. These include halophytes as well as species that are unique in Lower Austria or Austria. One particularly notable plant is sea milkwort (Glaux maritima): Elsewhere in the Central European continental region, it does not occur over an area of comparable size to that found in Zwingendorf’s salt habitats.

The Glaubersalzsteppe can be explored via a nature trail. Multilingual information panels explain the importance of the nature reserve interactively, explicitly including information for children. The trail is freely accessible at all times. This makes it especially suitable for flexible day planning, as you are not tied to a specific event time. The village museum also features a nature conservation exhibition providing information about the rare, in some cases unique, fauna and flora of the Glaubersalzsteppe and Saliterweide.

History, Heritage and Cellar Lane

Zwingendorf also has several distinctive cultural attractions. The Catholic parish church of St Lawrence is a protected historic monument. Its patron saint is St Lawrence, and the church dates back to 1784. The Zwingendorf Village Museum was established in 1990 in the Old Sawmill. The Joslowitz Heritage Room documents the history, culture and social life of Joslowitz, now Jaroslavice, as well as the expulsion of the German inhabitants in 1945 and 1946.

Another prominent site is the Zwingendorf Memorial. It commemorates the former municipality of Joslowitz and is located 500 m from the border. From there, you can walk cross-border to Joslowitz along a road or field track via Europaplatz, following the border line. The route thus combines a tangible experience of the landscape with the region’s historical theme, without requiring you to plan cultural activities and exercise separately.

Schatzberg is home to the historic, extensive Zwingendorf cellar lane, with an old wine press and lovingly restored cellar buildings. The Zwingendorfer Schatz is also reached on Stage 6 and offers cosy places to linger and take a break. At atmospheric events such as guided tours and lantern walks, you can explore the cellar lane’s small world of wine.

Exploring by Bike and on Foot

Anyone wishing to actively explore Zwingendorf can include the short loop of the Naturjuwelen cycling route, which passes through the village. The Naturjuwelen cycling route starts in Laa an der Thaya or at the spa hotel. On Stage 6, the Mottschüttelbach stream accompanies the route between fields to the Glaubersalz salt soils. This offers several different ways to explore the area: the freely accessible nature trail, a cycling tour through Zwingendorf, or a hike connected with the border.

A holiday apartment or holiday home in Zwingendorf can therefore be selected according to your preferred holiday pace. Nature enthusiasts can make the salt habitats the focus of their stay, while culturally minded travellers can combine the church, museum, heritage room and cellar lane. Families will find an approach to the landscape on the interactive nature trail that was explicitly designed to include children. If you would like to compare other places, you can also find Eichenbrunn, Pellendorf, Bernhardsthal, Kreuttal, Wilfersdorf, Wolfpassing An Der Hochleithen, Ladendorf and Falkenstein Bei Poysdorf.
