Kreuttal between cellar lanes, forests and panoramic views

Kreuttal combines historic traces, wine tradition and wooded landscapes to create a varied travel destination. More than half of the municipality’s area is forested. As a result, forest paths, viewpoints and opportunities to observe nature are just as much a part of the local landscape as chapels, mills and cellar lanes.

A distinctive starting point is the Hohlweg cellar lane in Hautzendorf. It is located in a sunken lane, and several cellars are still built of stone. A guided cellar-lane walk combines this local highlight with a DAC wine tasting and ends at the Winter wine tavern with a snack and drinks. Those who value arriving by train when choosing a holiday apartment will find Hautzendorf to be the only place in the municipality of Kreuttal with a direct connection to the commuter railway. The railway station was built in 1870 in the Hohlweg cellar lane.

Historical discoveries in the local districts

Near Hornsburg, prehistoric circular ditch systems indicate that Kreuttal was already inhabited more than 5,000 years ago. Today, the Schlossberg and the foundations of a tower-like stone building probably constructed in the 13th century are still visible at Hornsburg Castle. The Türkenschanze is also located near Hornsburg, a rampart system with a circumference of around 4.7 kilometers and an interior area of approximately 78 hectares.

In Unterolberndorf, the Kulturhaus is housed in an Early Romanesque chapel that served as a church until the 19th century. Cultural events are regularly held there. Near Unterolberndorf, at the entrance to the actual Kreuttal valley, the Luisenmühle stands about 200 meters from the village. It is the largest and most striking of several mills on the Russbach. In Hautzendorf, the guild tree erected in 1972 in the park and the Rosalia Chapel at Rosalienplatz commemorate the local history. The chapel commemorates the 1850 cholera epidemic, in which 52 people died.

Another cultural highlight is the pilgrimage church of St. Lambert on the “Holy Mountain.” It is located on a wooded hill north of Hautzendorf, is 800 years old and is considered a particularly mystical place of power. The church tower contains a bell dating from 1452. Pilgrimages take place there every year on Ascension Day and on the feast of St. Lambert, or on the following Sunday.

Hiking, cycling and panoramic views

For longer explorations, the Kreuttal circular hiking trail is a good choice. It is the longest of the four marked circular hiking trails, connects all three places in the municipality of Kreuttal and begins at the Rosalia Chapel in Hautzendorf. The forest nature trail in Unterolberndorf showcases the diversity of flora in the Kreuttal. At the 365-meter-high Glockenberg, a 25-meter-high observation tower contributes to a special landscape experience. The observation tower on the Kreuttal circular hiking trail offers views of the surrounding villages and, in clear weather, as far as the Carpathians and Schneeberg.

Cyclists also have several options for exploring the area: three cycling tours can be ridden in Kreuttal. The Kreuttal cycling route runs mostly along paved paths. A few short gravel and natural-surface sections should be taken into account; apart from that, the route can also be ridden with a racing bike. The first of the three cycling tours leads via Unterolberndorf and Hornsburg to Kreuzstetten and directly through the Kreut Forest. The Kreuttal Equestrian Center in Ritzendorf hosts national and international equestrian tournaments and events every year.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Kreuttal, you can therefore weigh up different travel preferences: Hautzendorf combines a cellar lane, pilgrimage history and a commuter railway connection, while forest paths, panoramic views and cycling routes shape the character of the landscape. Culture, wine, outdoor activities and historical discoveries can be combined according to the desired focus of your holiday.
