Altlichtenwarth lies in the sunny hills of the northeastern Weinviertel, near the tripoint of Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Arable farming and viticulture shape the gently rolling landscape. Those wishing to combine landscapes, local history and wine on a trip will find a range of opportunities here for eventful days as well as quieter ones.

Panoramic Views and Trails on the Hutsaulberg

A special vantage point is the observation tower on the Hutsaulberg. From there, the panoramic view extends across more than 50 villages. In clear weather, you can see across the northeastern Weinviertel, to South Moravia and eastern Slovakia; on rare days, the view even reaches as far as the Schneeberg. This makes the tower one of the notable destinations for anyone who wants to experience a trip not only through individual sights, but also through expansive landscapes.

The “Around the Hutsaulberg” hiking trail is 7.5 kilometres long and has around 130 metres of elevation gain. The route passes the Jagateich spring, which produces particularly iron-rich water. There are also 16 stations with QR codes offering explanations of local history. This allows a hike to be combined with specific insights into the surrounding area. If you are travelling with people of varying hiking experience, you can take the trail length and elevation gain into account when planning your day.

Culture and Viticulture in the Village

Altlichtenwarth’s history includes the parish church of St Nicholas. It is a Romanesque fortified church and is still surrounded by a defensive wall. East of the Hutsaulberg, at the highest point of the road to Katzelsdorf, there is also the Sebastian Chapel, a plague chapel. On the road to Hausbrunn, a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands beneath old trees. Its inscription gives the year 1750 and states that the stone was erected in his honour out of pious devotion and as an eternal vow.

Viticulture in Altlichtenwarth dates back to the 14th century and continues to shape the character of the village today. In the cellar lane on the Silberberg, a cellar district extends along the Silberberg across seven levels. At the Pforakeller, a representative wine-tasting cellar and Heuriger run by the local winegrowers’ association, you can taste quality wines from Altlichtenwarth. Today, mainly white wines are produced, especially Weinviertel Grüner Veltliner. For a trip planned around culinary experiences, these places and themes provide a clear guiding thread.

Cycling Tours and Seasonal Variety

The area can also be explored by bicycle: the Welschriesling Wine Cycle Route passes through Altlichtenwarth in a northwesterly direction towards Herrnbaumgarten. Another reference point is the Weinviertel Rastplatz Altlichtenwarth, located outside Altlichtenwarth on the road to Bernhardsthal and directly on the Liechtenstein Cycle Route. In winter, the Schwemm, or village pond, is used as an ice-skating rink. Depending on the season, you can focus your stay more strongly on wine and cycling, on history and hiking, or on a winter activity.

When looking for a holiday apartment or other accommodation in Altlichtenwarth, it is worth deciding on your main priorities in advance. Anyone primarily wishing to explore the Hutsaulberg and the landscape should include the 7.5-kilometre loop and its elevation gain in their daily plans. For travellers interested in culture and wine, the fortified church, chapels, cellar lane and wine tasting are the main attractions. The choice of accommodation is therefore not tied to a general expectation of amenities, but to how you would like to spend your days in Altlichtenwarth.
