Discover Bockfließ: Cellar Lanes, Wine and Paths between the Marchfeld and Weinviertel
Accommodation in Bockfließ
Bockfließ lies on the southern slope of the Hochleiten Forest at the northwestern edge of the Marchfeld – precisely where the Marchfeld plain borders the Southern Weinviertel wine-growing region. This location shapes the character of the village: on your trip, wide-open landscapes, wine-growing, cellar lanes and historical sights come together. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Bockfließ can therefore choose their accommodation according to their preferred travel style – with walks, cultural discoveries or regional delights as different focuses.
Between Views, Cellar Lanes and Vineyards
The Franzosensprung offers a special landscape experience. It is the steepest and deepest section of Bockfließ’s main cellar lane, which is also called Unterer Tiefweg or Untere Kellergasse. The viewing platform at the Franzosensprung, built in 2010, offers a wide view over the Marchfeld and the wine-growing region. This makes it possible to incorporate Bockfließ’s location between the plain and the wine-growing region directly into your travel plans.
The approximately 5.9-kilometre “8,500 Steps Trail” leads to the viewing tower at the Franzosensprung. The route can be included in your plans for a shorter outing. If you would like to plan a longer hike, the 70-kilometre “Wanderpuzzle Wolkersdorf” regional circular trail offers a larger-scale option. Bockfließ is part of this circular trail; yellow signposts lead past sights, natural features and viewpoints. Depending on your time and interests, you can therefore choose between a manageable loop and a far-reaching hiking option.
The “Luduvicusweg” is being developed as an independent circular hiking trail around Bockfließ; work is under way on its signposting along monuments, wayside shrines, hollow ways, cellar lanes and viewpoints.
History Reflected in the Villagescape
Bockfließ also tells of different eras away from the trails. In Altstatt, the former Jewish ghetto with its square is still recognisable. A monument and a plaque commemorate the Jewish history of the village. Bockfließ Parish Church adds to this historical circuit: the present church was built between 1874 and 1876 in the Neo-Gothic style.
One of the unusual details is the Bockfließ pillory. Its two underground cells for prisoners are remarkable and unique in Austria. Bockfließ Castle is known as a moated castle in the 15th century and was converted into a castellated fortress in the 18th century. The Baroque Trinity Column was erected in 1729 by Hans Adam Count of Abensperg and Traun in thanks for his family being spared from the plague. The John Column was commissioned in 1737 by businessman Franz Falkensamer.
Regional Impressions for Planning Your Trip
White and red wines ripen on the predominantly south-facing hills of Bockfließ and are offered to guests by local farmers. The FNL Herb Garden Bockfließ offers guided tours of the herb garden by telephone appointment. If you are travelling with your family, you can combine different ideas for a day: a route with views, historical discoveries in the village or an appointment at the herb garden. When choosing accommodation in Bockfließ, this thematic focus helps you define the emphasis of your trip without combining the individual experiences into a fixed route.
