Bernhardsthal between history and landscape

Bernhardsthal combines cultural and historical discoveries with bodies of water, paths through the landscape and special nature observations. Those looking for a holiday destination where different interests can be combined will find several clearly distinct experiences here: Hallstatt-period burial mounds, a large landscape pond, cycling paths with connections to EuroVelo 9 and the KTM cycle path, and nature trails with easy-to-understand information about the surrounding area.

Tumuli and the Amber Road

Among the most distinctive destinations are the three tumuli of Bernhardsthal. The Hallstatt-period burial mounds have long been a popular attraction for exploration. Directly on the Amber Road, a 800 m² rest area with a viewing platform is located by the tumuli. Visitors can find information there about this historical rarity. The rest area was also built to protect the rare dry grasslands. This allows visitors to combine their visit with a view of a special landscape feature without losing sight of the site's cultural and historical significance.

Landscape pond and railway history

With a water surface of 25 ha and a shoreline of approx. 2.7 km, the Bernhardsthal landscape pond is a defining feature of the village. It is the largest body of water in the Weinviertel. The railway brick bridge of the Kaiser Ferdinand Northern Railway is an unusual combination of natural surroundings and technological history: it divides the landscape pond, dates from 1839 and is Austria's oldest preserved railway structure.

At the landscape pond, pedal boats can be rented during opening hours at the adjacent “Teichstüberl” Heuriger or at the municipal office. This provides a specific connection to the water for planning your day, while the Thaya floodplains with their extensive meadows and the pine forest offer further opportunities to linger.

Cycle paths, circular routes and nature trails

Cyclists will find well-developed cycle paths in Bernhardsthal with a connection to EuroVelo 9 via Reintal. There is also a connection to the KTM cycle path via well-developed cycle paths. Hikers can enjoy circular routes with a visitor guidance system and information boards at prominent points. Depending on your preferred focus, you can therefore plan your excursions around longer cycling tours, circular routes with a visitor guidance system or individual nature destinations.

The “Holzweg” is a nature trail in Bernhardsthal. Many plants around the pond are marked with QR codes; by scanning them, visitors can learn interesting facts about the flora of the Weinviertel. At the Reintal Bee Educational Trail, visitors can observe worker bees in a display case. The trail is one kilometre long and has seven information boards about important beneficial organisms. These two offerings have different focuses: the “Holzweg” combines knowledge about plants with the landscape pond, while the Bee Educational Trail draws attention to the importance of beneficial organisms.

Choose Bernhardsthal as your holiday destination

Bernhardsthal has a railway connection at the terminus of the Northern Railway. This can be taken into account when planning your journey, as can your own preferences for cycling tours, hiking trails, water or cultural and historical destinations. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worthwhile first deciding on your preferred daily rhythm: Should your holiday be shaped primarily by active excursions, time spent at the landscape pond or changing discoveries between nature and history? Bernhardsthal offers several specific points of interest for this, without requiring every day to be planned in the same way.

More places to include in your planning

If you would like to compare Bernhardsthal with other destinations, you can also include Großebersdorf, Pellendorf, Ottenthal, Wildendürnbach, Großharras, Gnadendorf, Laa An Der Thaya and Wolkersdorf Im Weinviertel in your further travel planning.
