Neudorf Bei Staatz: Culture, Trails and Discoveries
Accommodation in Neudorf Bei Staatz
If you want to discover cultural history and a range of activities in the Weinviertel, Neudorf Bei Staatz offers plenty of starting points. Churches and works of art tell stories spanning several centuries, while the walking and cycling trails offer different experiences. In Kirchstetten, a Baroque castle and a wayside chapel are among the notable historic sights. A guided tour of Biohof Schmidt focuses on agriculture and regional products.
Getting around on foot or by bike
In the municipality of Neudorf in the Weinviertel, a cycling path around two kilometres long runs alongside the road west of state road L 24. It has been officially opened to traffic. If you prefer to get around on foot, Route 1 is an easy walk: the route is 7.1 kilometres long, takes around one hour and 45 minutes, and has an elevation difference of 23 metres. This gives you both a walking time and the elevation gain for the route. The lengths of the two options offer a starting point for planning, but they describe different routes. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before setting out for a walk.
Architectural history in Kirchstetten and Neudorf
The Baroque Suttner Castle in Kirchstetten has foundations dating from the 16th century and was remodelled based on plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The ballroom houses Franz Anton Maulpertsch’s first documented work, “The Triumph of Truth over Time,” from 1750–52. Every year, as part of “Classical Music in Summer in the Weinviertel,” Kirchstetten Castle becomes a cultural gathering place for music lovers from Austria and abroad.
The Church of the Holy Spirit in Kirchstetten also reflects several phases of construction. Its Romanesque nave dates from the 13th century; around 1400, a Gothic choir and Gothic tower were added. The high altar was created around 1700, and the associated crucifixion group dates from the second decade of the 18th century. The organ by Ignaz Reinold was built in 1826. The church thus brings together architectural features and furnishings from several centuries.
In Neudorf, the parish church was built in 1724 and its tower in 1770. The building received a later addition in 2001 with a new church tower spire designed in the Gothic style. On the main square, the Marian column, erected in 1859, commemorates the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, proclaimed on 8 December 1854. The Rochus Chapel, a wayside chapel with a curved gable, stands north of Kirchstetten, outside the village. Its wooden figure of Saint Roch dates from around 1700. Countess Daun of Kirchstetten had the chapel built in 1679 in gratitude for her rescue from the ravages of the plague.
Another cultural highlight is the Zlabern wine cellar lane. It lies in the northwest of Zlabern and leads towards the forest. The castle, churches, Marian column, chapel and wine cellar lane offer a range of topics for anyone interested in regional architectural and cultural history.
