Wilfersdorf: History, Stations of the Cross and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Wilfersdorf
Wilfersdorf brings together Liechtenstein history, sacred heritage and themed routes. The castle and parish church reflect the history of the Liechtenstein family, while the Stations of the Cross and the routes offer different ways to explore the town. You can focus on architecture and local customs, or plan longer distances by bike and on foot. When choosing a holiday apartment in Wilfersdorf, it is therefore important to first consider which of these perspectives you want to shape your trip.
Church, Castle and Tradition
Wilfersdorf Parish Church was originally built in the Gothic style and later enlarged in the Baroque style. The Liechtenstein family crypt lies beneath the altar area, which is now furnished in a modern style. The sarcophagi hold the ancestors of the present-day Princely Family of Liechtenstein. The crypt is only rarely open to visitors; please check current access arrangements before visiting the church.
The Wilfersdorf Stations of the Cross, also known as Calvary Hill and the Holy Mountain, were established in 1674 by Prince Hartmann of Liechtenstein and his wife Elisabeth Sidonia. The Glaube in Stein pilgrimage route begins at St. Nicholas Parish Church in Wilfersdorf. It passes the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and heads north towards the Farewell or Travellers’ Chapel. After 50 m, the route reaches the first station of the Wilfersdorf Stations of the Cross on the Holy Mountain, marked by the Mount of Olives group.
Since 1979, the Palm Sunday procession on the Holy Mountain has been part of the customs of the Wilfersdorf village community. Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf is also associated with a recurring cultural programme: its connection with the castle festival dates back to 2003. If you would like to include an event in your travel plans, please check the current dates.
A guided tour of Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf provides basic information at the outset about the Liechtenstein family’s importance to the region. If you would like to plan a tour, check the dates and reservation process in advance.
Cycling Routes and Cross-Border Trails
The Sylvaner themed cycle route is a circular route of about 60 km, connecting Wilfersdorf with Mistelbach, Asparn, Staatz and Poysdorf. The Liechtenstein cycle route starts at Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf, passes through Großkrut and Bernhardsthal into the Czech Republic, and continues past the castles of Lednice and Valtice. This gives you a choice between a circular route linking several towns and a cross-border cycle route with named stops.
Another cross-border themed trail starts at the castle. It is 22 km long, and the walking time is about six hours. The routes therefore also differ in the time and type of travel involved: you can choose a cycling tour or plan a longer walk. The approximate duration of the themed trail can help you make it the main focus of your day.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Wilfersdorf, you can first consider what you want your trip to focus on: the architecture and history of the church and castle, the traditions of the Holy Mountain, or active days on the cycling and walking routes. Compare the tours by route, length and time required before setting your itinerary. This way, you can choose accommodation based on the experiences that matter to you, rather than trying to squeeze every option into a single day.
