Falkenstein near Poysdorf combines a long history of its castle with wine-growing culture and trails through a varied landscape. The castle ruins, Oagossn, parish church and several hiking options each offer a different focus. You can tailor your stay to your interests in architectural history, wine-growing or spending time outdoors.

Castle Ruins and Anabaptist History

The history of Falkenstein Castle Ruins dates back to the mid-11th century. The ruins’ Täufergwölb houses a small museum about the Anabaptist movement. Two distinct historical subjects come together here: the castle’s long history and the history of the Anabaptist movement. If you are interested in history, the museum offers a separate focus alongside the castle ruins.

Parish Church with Several Building Periods

Falkenstein’s parish church took its present form in the second half of the 17th century and was built in the early Baroque style. Its tower, however, dates from the late Romanesque and Gothic periods. The church also houses a Gothic sandstone Madonna dating from around 1400, of the type known as the Beautiful Madonnas. This building therefore brings together different historical and artistic references. The church is open daily and admission is free; nevertheless, check local notices before your visit.

Oagossn and the History of Wine-Growing

The Falkenstein cellar lane, also known as “Oagossn”, consists of two rows of cellars facing each other, with a total of 65 press houses and adjoining underground cellars. The original form of the press houses, most of which date from the 19th century, has been preserved. The history of wine-growing also has a legal dimension: between the 13th and 18th centuries, the Falkenstein Mountain Court was the highest judicial authority for vineyard matters and the proceeds generated from them. Every year on the third weekend in September, the “Wein-Kunst-Kultur” wine autumn festival takes place in the Oagossn. Check the current programme before travelling.

Wine Trails and Scenery

The Falkenstein Wine Education Trail was established in 1975 as Austria’s first wine education trail. It explores the history of wine-growing, working techniques and information about the climate and soils. The landscape is another focus: the well-marked wine hiking park leads through oak forests and meadows, past fields and vineyards, and over limestone cliffs with rare dry grassland vegetation. This lets you choose between learning about wine-growing and following a trail through different landscapes.

The “Kleiner Falkenflug” (Little Falcon Flight) concept comprises 25 stations on limestone rocks featuring stories told by the falcon. The two routes of the “tut gut” Falkenstein hiking trail also offer different highlights. Route 1 includes Falkenstein Castle Ruins and the Anabaptist Museum. The description of Route 2, updated in August 2026, leads via the Oagossn cellar lane, the vineyard maze, a panoramic view of Falkenstein and the 425-metre-high Galgenberg, then back to the town hall. These stops give you specific points of reference when choosing between a focus on the castle’s history and a route featuring a cellar lane, vineyards and views.

Pilgrim Trail and Directions

The Weinviertel Way of St James leaves Falkenstein via the Oagossn and continues through the Falkenstein Forest in the direction of Poysdorf. The Falkenstein section includes the shady Lourdes Grotto and the Bründl spring, both good places to take a break. Check trail conditions before setting out. The Kreuzberg rises as a distinctive rocky hill right beside Falkenstein.

You can reach Falkenstein by car either via Laa/Thaya or via Poysdorf; check road connections before setting off. When choosing a holiday apartment, let your preferred holiday pace guide you: would you like to focus on historic buildings and Anabaptist history, explore wine-growing, or spend more of your time on hiking and pilgrimage trails?
