Located on the banks of the Katni River and known as a major railway junction, Katni brings together a range of travel experiences: historic sites, religious places, forested valleys and options for outings together. Train connections from Katni reach almost every part of India. Those looking to fill their trip with culture and history will find plenty of places to explore here, as will families seeking out parks or natural attractions.

Forts, rock art and religious sites

Vijayraghavgarh Fort is associated with the 1857 uprising against British rule; its construction began as early as 1826. The fort includes the Raghav Ji Temple and carvings at the Rangmahal. Historical events and architectural details sit side by side here: the site can be explored both for its role in history and for its temples and intricate workmanship.

At Roopnath Dham, natural water pools meet a cave shrine dedicated to Lord Bholenath and inscriptions by Emperor Ashoka. The Dham lies at one end of the Kaimor Hills. The Ashokan rock edict at Rupnath Padaria in Katni is listed by the Archaeological Survey of India as a centrally protected monument. Those interested in early history can also include Chittaranjan Shail Forest Park in their plans: remains from the Stone Age and rock paintings thousands of years old are preserved there. Images carved into the rock depict hunting scenes and former settlements; footprints and a museum featuring remains of early humans round out the visit.

The religious sites also offer a variety of experiences. Shri Digambar Jain Atishay Kshetra Bahoriband houses a 16-foot-tall statue of Lord Shantinath, the 16th Tirthankara of Jainism, as well as stone inscriptions. Chaturyug Dham Badera has five storeys, each dedicated to a different Yuga; a Maa Durga temple is located on the top floor. In Bilhari, Pushpavati Nagri preserves history dating back to 945 CE and is surrounded by 85 temples and 13 stepwells. Bilhari’s attractions also include an archaeology museum.

Forest valleys, water and parks

In Khusra, forest-surrounded valleys and natural ponds shape the landscape; the area is used as a picnic spot in the district. Vasudha Falls plunge through forested valleys from a height of several hundred feet. Visitors bathe in the pool below, and families also gather there for picnics. Families also come to the Umardoli Dam for picnics. The Umardoli Reservoir is considered the only arch dam of its kind in the state. The Forest Department organises treks in the forest area around the Umardoli Arch Dam every year.

For days out in the park, Suramya Park and Jagriti Park offer different attractions. Suramya Park has swings and other play equipment for children, boating and a vehicle for tours around the park; it also offers a gym and a swimming pool. Jagriti Park covers 60 acres of extensive green space. Its attractions include swings, yoga centres, activities for children and a science park. When planning your trip, you can choose between park activities and outings into forested landscapes.

Temple festivals and local experiences

Fairs are held at Maa Sharda Devi Temple during both Chaitra Navratri and Sharadiya Navratri. The temple in Vijayraghavgarh welcomes devotees every day. A fair is held each year on Basant Panchami at Mahadevi Mata Madhiya in Dashraman, a roughly 200-year-old shrine with a rock worshipped as a goddess. These recurring events give a visit a religious and community setting, although the two places do not share the same festival programme.

A special Shringar Aarti takes place every Monday at Vijaynath Dham Temple in Barhi, and a Shiva procession is held on Mahashivratri. The temple is considered an example of community unity. A Muslim family from Barhi donated the adjoining 17 acres of land. Katni district’s village of Tewari offers another glimpse of local character: it is known for bhutta, or sweet corn.

Choose the right location for your holiday rental

When choosing a holiday rental or holiday home, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: historic and religious sites, park activities, or forest and water landscapes offer different experiences. If you plan to arrive by train, Katni’s role as a major railway junction is another factor to consider.
