Katni: Temples, Urs and Prehistoric Rock Art
Accommodation in Katni
Katni brings religious sites together with evidence of prehistoric ways of life. Rock paintings, figures and traces of earlier inhabitants stand alongside temples, a Gurdwara and the annual Urs of Peer Baba. A park with a science park also adds to this range. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to explore Katni primarily through its religious sites, its long human history or the park: each place brings different themes to the fore.
Rock Art and Early Ways of Life
The evidence preserved in Katni relates to the way of life, weapons and hunting of prehistoric people. It is associated with a history dating back 10,000 years. In Jhinjhri, Chittaranjan Rock Forest has rock paintings that are thousands of years old. There you can see figures and hunting scenes carved into the rocks, as well as dwellings of prehistoric people and footprints. The motifs highlight different aspects: alongside the images, traces of habitation and movement also draw attention to early ways of life. Chittaranjan Rock Forest also includes a museum about the remains of prehistoric people.
Religious Sites and Shared Celebrations
At the Peer Baba site on the Katni–Jabalpur road, the shrine of Hazrat Itreshah Baba stands across the road from the old temple of Lord Bajrangbali (Hanuman). People of all religions come together for the annual Urs of Peer Baba. Thus, both the two named shrines facing one another and an annual shared celebration are among Katni’s religious features.
The Maa Jalpa Devi Temple stands in the centre of Katni. Images of Maa Jalpa, Kalka and Sharda, as well as 64 Yoginis, are located there. Chaturyug Dham Badera is a religious site in the village of Badera on the Katni–Maihar road. Hare Madhav Darbar, a Gurdwara, is located in Madhavnagar. When choosing places to visit, you can distinguish between the temple in the city centre and the locations of Badera and Madhavnagar.
A Different Focus at Jagriti Park
Jagriti Park is in Madhavnagar, is operated by Katni Paryavaran Sanrakshan Samiti and is called the “Oxygen Tank.” The park includes a science park intended to expand children’s knowledge. This adds a place with its own focus on learning for children to Katni’s religious and prehistoric themes.
Katni as a Base for Your Trip
These different themes can also help structure your choice of a holiday rental in Katni. If religious sites are your priority, the Maa Jalpa Devi Temple in the centre and the locations of Badera and Madhavnagar offer specific points of reference. If you are interested in prehistoric history, Chittaranjan Rock Forest in Jhinjhri, with its rock images and traces, comes into focus; the park adds a distinct learning focus. Before searching, consider which of these themes you would particularly like to explore and compare them with the location details of your accommodation. This way, your choice will reflect the places that matter for your trip.
