Shivpuri combines impressive architecture with lakes, forest landscapes and a distinctive food culture. Families planning a trip can choose from different focuses: historic architecture and temples, nature, or regional specialities. This makes it possible to choose a holiday rental based on which experiences you want to be at the centre of your stay.

Architecture and History in Shivpuri

The chhatris are marble memorials built by Scindia rulers and set in an elaborately landscaped Mughal garden. Their architecture blends Hindu and Islamic styles with Mughal pavilions. There is also a special evening programme: classical music performances take place at the chhatris each evening as part of the prayer session. The memorials thus bring together architectural forms and a musical tradition that continues into the evening.

George Castle was built in 1911. The Scindia ruler of Gwalior at the time had it constructed for an overnight stop by King George V of England. From there, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the lakes and Kardhai forests. Madhav Vilas Palace offers another architectural highlight: the Scindias’ pink summer palace has features of colonial architecture, including marble floors, iron supports, elegant terraces and a Ganapati mandap.

Tatya Tope Memorial Park commemorates freedom fighter Tatya Tope and contains a life-size bronze statue of him. The temples also give Shivpuri a distinctive historical and religious character. Siddheshwar Temple is an old Shiva temple near Jadhav-Sagar Lake on the eastern side of the city. Banganga is an old temple known for its 52 sacred kunds.

Lakes, Forest and Birdlife

Sakhya-Sagar Lake borders the forests of Madhav National Park. The habitats there include those of mugger crocodiles, Indian pythons and monitor lizards. For travellers particularly interested in nature, these offer a different focus from the memorials and palaces. George Castle also affords views across lakes and Kardhai forests.

Around 245 bird species live in Karera Bird Sanctuary, including migratory and resident species. Its diversity therefore includes both birds that visit the sanctuary during migration and species that live there year-round. Bhadaiya Kund offers another connection with nature: this picturesque picnic spot is beside a natural spring whose water is rich in minerals.

Festivals and Local Specialities

The Siddheshwar-Banganga Festival takes place every February around Siddheshwar and Banganga temples and draws many visitors. If you want to plan your trip around this event, February is the time of the annual festival. Regional food culture offers another way to get to know Shivpuri: several varieties of gujiya are made in Shivpuri District. This Indian dessert is prepared for festivals such as Holi and Diwali. Panipuri is a popular street food in the district.

Getting There and Regional Orientation

Shivpuri has its own railway station, with connections to Delhi, Bhopal and Indore. This may be a factor when planning your journey. You can also explore beyond the city: Narwar Fort is in the vicinity of Shivpuri, on a hill 41 km from Shivpuri.
